System down? Here's the honest playbook
Mon–Sat 8 AM–7 PM, Sunday emergency on-call (call-out fee applies). No fake 24/7 promises — just what genuinely counts as an emergency, what outranks us, and what to do while you wait.
Gas smell: safety first
Leave the house first — don't flip switches or light anything. Call PSE's gas emergency line (1-888-225-5773) or 911 from outside. HVAC comes after the utility clears the leak.
Carbon monoxide alarm: safety first
Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. Once the fire department clears the home, we diagnose what the equipment did — that furnace inspection is now genuinely urgent.
What genuinely counts as an emergency
- No heat during a cold snap — especially with infants, elderly occupants, or medical needs in the home
- No cooling during a heat event for heat-vulnerable occupants
- Water actively leaking from HVAC equipment onto floors or ceilings
- A system making burning smells or repeatedly tripping its breaker
A system that's merely acting odd — noises, short cycles, weak airflow — deserves a prompt scheduled visit, not emergency pricing. We'll tell you which yours is when you call.
While you wait
- Heat out: close off unused rooms, layer up, run a safe space heater in the occupied room (3 feet of clearance, never extension cords)
- Cooling out: close blinds, move low, run fans on people (not empty rooms), hydrate — and mind heat-vulnerable household members first
- Water leaking: kill the system at the thermostat (and the furnace switch if safe), towel the pooling, put a bucket under the drip
- Check the simple stuff once: thermostat mode and batteries, breaker (one reset only), filter — our symptom checker walks the safe checks
Hours & the priority queue
Monday–Saturday 8:00 AM–7:00 PM · Sunday emergency on-call (call-out fee quoted before anyone rolls). During cold snaps and heat waves the queue is real: plan members ride priority — next business day on Elite (plus one free emergency call a year), within 3 business days on Essential.
The questions people ask at midnight
Are you available 24/7?
No — and we won't pretend otherwise. We run Monday–Saturday 8:00 AM–7:00 PM, with a Sunday emergency on-call technician for urgent problems (an after-hours call-out fee applies). What we will do is be straight about the queue when you call and get to genuine emergencies as fast as the schedule physically allows.
What does the Sunday call-out fee cover?
It covers bringing a technician out outside normal operating hours — quoted when you call, before anyone rolls. Elite plan members get one free emergency service call per calendar year and overtime billed at regular business rates; both plan tiers carry priority scheduling (next business day on Elite, within 3 business days on Essential).
My furnace died overnight. What do I actually do at 2 AM?
If it's a safety situation (gas smell, CO alarm), follow the safety steps — those outrank everything. Otherwise: run the safe checks (thermostat, breaker once, filter), close off rooms and layer up for the night, and call at 8 AM — describe it as no-heat and mention any vulnerable occupants so we triage you honestly.
Will a maintenance plan actually prevent emergencies?
It prevents the preventable ones — which is most of them: the failed capacitor in the first heat wave, the dirty flame sensor in October. The instrumented seasonal visit catches parts trending toward failure at scheduled prices instead of emergency ones. Plans from $23/month; the math is on the plans page.
