What's a heat pump's balance point — and do I need backup heat?

The balance point is the outdoor temperature at which your heat pump's heating output exactly equals your home's heat loss — above it the heat pump alone keeps up; below it, backup heat (electric strips or a gas furnace in dual-fuel setups) assists. In a well-sized Greater Seattle install with cold-climate equipment, that crossing point sits low enough that backup heat runs only a handful of hours per year, not all winter.

Two curves crossing

Picture two lines on a chart. Your home's heat loss rises as it gets colder outside. A heat pump's output declines slowly as it gets colder (much more slowly on modern variable-speed units). The balance point is where the lines cross. Everything about a good install — equipment selection, sizing, even duct sealing — is about pushing that crossing point down.

Ductless systems in Burien and West Seattle often omit backup heat entirely when sized with cold-climate equipment — the balance point lands below typical January lows, and the house never asks for strips. Ducted retrofits on leaky older homes may still warrant strips or dual-fuel; the load calculation and envelope honesty decide.

Heat strips vs dual-fuel backup

Electric heat strips are resistance coils inside the air handler — cheap to install, dead reliable, but they heat at one-half to one-quarter of the heat pump's efficiency, so you want them running rarely. Dual-fuel uses a gas furnace as the backup stage instead: pricier hardware, but cold-snap heat at gas rates, and it's the natural configuration when you're adding a heat pump to a home with a good existing furnace (PSE's hybrid rebate — $1,500, $2,400 income-qualified — targets exactly this).

Either way, the controls decide the economics: the switchover settings determine when backup engages. Set wrong, strips or furnace run hours they shouldn't, and the savings quietly leak away.

The 'my heat pump doesn't save money' pattern

Nine times out of ten it's backup heat running too much: strips engaging on every recovery from a nighttime setback, a dual-fuel switchover set too warm, or an undersized heat pump leaning on backup all winter. The fix is diagnosis and configuration, not despair — and it's a standard part of a maintenance visit on these systems.

Related trap: deep nighttime setbacks. With a heat pump, a big morning recovery can trigger backup heat; a modest setback (or letting a smart thermostat manage recovery gradually) usually costs less than the 'savings' of a deep one.

In Puget Sound's mild winters, a properly commissioned system should show aux heat only during the occasional cold snap — not on ordinary 40°F days. If yours does, book a service visit to log strip or furnace engagement before you blame the heat pump itself.

Do all heat pumps need backup heat in Seattle?

No — plenty of well-sized cold-climate installs here run with no backup at all, especially ductless systems. Backup is a design decision: it buys recovery speed and margin for the rare deep cold snap. What you shouldn't accept is backup as a crutch for undersizing.

How do I know if my heat strips are running too much?

Clues: a winter electric bill far above expectations, vents blowing very hot air regularly (strip heat feels hotter than heat pump supply air), or your thermostat showing 'aux heat' for long stretches in mild weather. A service visit can log when and why auxiliary heat engages — diagnostics are paid visits, but cheaper than a winter of strip heat you didn't intend to buy.

What balance point should a Seattle install target?
