The longer answer
Fixed-speed equipment is a light switch; an inverter is a dimmer. Matching output to the actual load means fewer starts (the hardest moment of a compressor's life), better dehumidification in summer, and efficiency ratings fixed-speed hardware can't reach — the top HSPF2 and SEER2 numbers on the market are all inverter-driven.
The design caveat: inverter equipment must be sized so it can modulate down into its efficient range. An oversized inverter unit behaves like on/off equipment — one more reason honest bids start from a load calculation.
