R-454B (A2L Refrigerant)
One of the new lower-global-warming refrigerants that replaced R-410A in new residential equipment as of 2025's federal transition. It's classified A2L ('mildly flammable'), which drove new handling standards, sensors, and equipment designs — and it's what new systems we install largely run on.
The longer answer
Refrigerant transitions happen roughly once a generation (R-22 → R-410A → now A2Ls like R-454B and R-32), driven by environmental regulation. Each transition creates a long service tail for the outgoing refrigerant with slowly rising costs — the same arc R-22 owners lived through in the 2010s.
Buying new equipment now means A2L equipment: designed for it, code-compliant, and future-proofed against the R-410A cost curve. It's not a reason to replace early — it's one more line in the math when replacement is on the table anyway.

For owners of R-410A systems: nothing changes today — service continues for years. The practical effect is on repair-vs-replace math as R-410A service parts and refrigerant gradually cost more.
