UV Germicidal Lights
Ultraviolet lamps mounted inside ductwork or at the coil that neutralize mold, bacteria, and viruses as air passes. They work alongside filtration — the filter catches particles; UV addresses the biological growth filters can't.
The longer answer
UV-C germicidal lamps (254 nm wavelength) disrupt the DNA of microorganisms passing through the air stream. They're most effective mounted at the evaporator coil — where standing moisture creates a mold breeding ground — and in the return duct path where air passes repeatedly.
UV doesn't replace filtration: it addresses biological growth on surfaces and in the airstream, not particulates. The combination of a good filter (MERV 11+) and coil UV covers both particle capture and biological control — a common IAQ upgrade on ducted systems in the Puget Sound's damp housing stock.
