HVAC filters: which one, which way, how often?

Three answers cover most HVAC filter questions: the size is printed on the old filter's frame (photograph it before the store run); buy the highest MERV your blower maintains airflow with — for most 1-inch slots that's MERV 8–11, with higher capture via a 4–5-inch media cabinet rather than a denser 1-inch pleat; and in Seattle's long October-through-May heating season, check monthly and change every 1–3 months. The airflow arrow always points toward the blower.

Why this tiny part causes huge failures

Every cubic foot of air your system moves passes through the filter. Clog it and the machine strangles: furnaces overheat and trip limits (then short-cycle, then crack heat exchangers), AC coils run too cold and ice solid, blowers strain against the restriction. DOE puts a clean filter at 5–15% lower AC energy use — and that's just the electricity, before the repair math.

Seattle's twist is runtime: an October-to-May heating season pushes far more air through a filter annually than milder climates. Our filters age in dog years.

Smoke season adds another load: a single bad AQI week can gray a filter that was fine the month before. After wildfire smoke passes through the region, inspect the filter even if it isn't due on the calendar — clogged media during the next heat event chokes AC exactly when you need airflow.

Choosing: the MERV-vs-airflow trade

Capture (MERV) costs airflow — denser media resists the blower. In a standard 1-inch slot, MERV 8 is the dust baseline and MERV 11 the practical allergy/smoke step-up for most systems; MERV 13 in a 1-inch slot chokes many residential blowers. The engineering way out is depth: a 4–5-inch media cabinet delivers MERV 11–13 capture with less restriction than a 1-inch MERV 8, and changes once or twice a year.

Washables and 'permanent' electrostatic filters: modest capture, honest only if actually washed monthly and dried fully. Most households do better with disposables they'll actually change.

Media cabinets matter for smoke season: a 4–5-inch MERV 11–13 pleat moves more air than a 1-inch MERV 13 in most residential blowers — important when Puget Sound wildfire weeks demand both capture and airflow. Ask about a cabinet during a tune-up if you've been cramming high-MERV 1-inch filters in and noticing weak airflow.

The change ritual, done right

System off. Note the airflow arrow on the old filter (it points toward the blower) before pulling it. Match size exactly — a filter that bends into the slot is leaking air around itself. Write the date on the new filter's frame. Heavy season: eyeball it monthly; if you can't see light through it, it's done. Homes with pets, remodeling dust, or smoke events run shorter cycles.

Stock matters: buy a few spares when you find the right size. Puget Sound smoke and heat events hit the same late-summer window — hardware shelves empty fast. A filter in the garage beats a no-heat call caused by a filterless week 'until the store run.'

The filter mistakes we get called for

The set-and-forget special: a filter installed at move-in and discovered, gray and bowed, years later — usually during a no-heat visit it caused. The backwards filter, quietly shedding efficiency. The 'wrong size but close enough' filter bypassing air around its edges. And max-MERV enthusiasm in a 1-inch slot, trading a dust problem for an airflow problem.

Also worth naming: running the system filterless 'until the store run.' A week of unfiltered operation loads the indoor coil with exactly the dirt the filter existed to catch — and coil cleaning costs a lot more than a filter.

In Burien and West Seattle ramblers especially, we find filters wedged into slots that don't quite fit — air bypasses around the edges and the filter does almost nothing while the blower works harder. Matching size exactly, arrow toward the blower, and a monthly eyeball during our long heating season prevents a surprising share of no-heat and iced-coil calls.

Questions Seattle homeowners ask

Where is my filter, anyway?

Most commonly in a slot where the return duct meets the furnace/air handler (basement, garage, or closet), sometimes behind a large return grille in a hallway wall or ceiling. Some homes have both — if so, they both need changing.

Which direction does the arrow face?

Toward the blower — in the direction air flows. At the furnace slot, that means the arrow points into the furnace; at a wall return grille, into the duct (away from the room). Backwards won't break anything immediately; it just filters worse and loads unevenly.

Every 1–3 months is a big range. Where am I in it?

Closer to monthly: pets, allergies, smoke events, remodeling, big households, heavy heating season. Closer to quarterly: no pets, mild season, deep media filters. The check costs nothing — monthly eyeball during October through May, change when it looks loaded or light won't pass. In Greater Seattle's long runtime season, most households land closer to monthly than they expect.

Do mini-split filters follow the same rules?

Ductless heads use washable mesh filters behind the front panel — rinse, dry fully, reinstall every few weeks in heavy season. Simpler than ducted filters, but more often; a loaded mesh quietly costs capacity and noise. Deep cleaning of the head's coil stays professional work. Tenants in ADUs with ductless should get a one-page filter-rinse guide — it's the most common deferred maintenance we see in backyard cottages.
