Cold-Climate Heat Pump
A heat pump engineered to keep heating efficiently in sub-freezing weather, using variable-speed compressors and enhanced refrigerant circuits. Certified cold-climate models maintain useful capacity well below the temperatures a standard heat pump handles.
The longer answer
Cold-climate designation isn't marketing — it's a performance spec. Models like Mitsubishi H2i hold 100% rated heating capacity at 5°F, far below Seattle's design temperature. Standard heat pumps derate in the cold; cold-climate units are built for the hours when heating demand peaks.
In Western Washington, cold-climate hardware means backup heat (strips or dual-fuel furnace) runs rarely or never — which is where the operating savings live. Specifying cold-climate on a Seattle install isn't overkill; it's matching equipment to the climate profile the load calculation assumes.
The Seattle angle
Utility rebates in the Seattle area key off efficiency tiers (see HSPF2) — higher-tier cold-climate equipment earns bigger discounts. PSE's ductless gas-conversion path requires ≥9.5 HSPF2, which cold-climate lines routinely exceed.
