Static Pressure

The resistance your blower pushes against to move air through ducts, filter, and coil — HVAC's version of blood pressure. High static pressure (undersized ducts, restrictive filters) strains motors and starves rooms of airflow. It's measured, not guessed, during a proper system evaluation.

The longer answer

Total external static pressure (TESP) is measured in inches of water column (in. w.c.) with a manometer during system operation. Manufacturer specs list maximum allowable TESP — exceed it and the blower can't move rated airflow, which means rooms go underserved and the coil can't exchange heat efficiently.

High static pressure culprits: undersized or crushed ducts, sharp transitions, restrictive 1-inch MERV 13 filters, dirty coils, and closed registers. Variable-speed blowers compensate somewhat by ramping up, but they consume more power doing it. The fix is usually ductwork or filter geometry, not a bigger motor.

The Seattle angle

Static pressure readings are standard scope on Glendale tune-ups — they're how we determine whether your system can handle a MERV 13 upgrade or needs a media cabinet instead.
