Balance Point
The outdoor temperature at which a heat pump's output exactly matches your home's heat loss. Below the balance point, supplemental heat (electric strips or a furnace in dual-fuel setups) makes up the difference. Modern cold-climate heat pumps push the balance point low enough that supplemental heat rarely runs in Western Washington.
The longer answer
Balance point is specific to your home and your equipment — a leaky 1920s Craftsman has a higher balance point than a tight new build with the same heat pump. Insulation upgrades lower the balance point; oversized equipment doesn't change it but can cause short-cycling above it.
In dual-fuel systems, the thermostat switches from heat pump to furnace at a set outdoor temperature — typically around 25–40°F depending on equipment. In Seattle, cold-climate ductless units often never reach their balance point in a normal winter, which is why backup heat stays off and operating costs stay low.
