Ductless Mini-Split
A heat pump that skips ductwork entirely: one outdoor unit feeds one or more wall- or ceiling-mounted indoor heads, each heating and cooling its own zone. Ideal for homes without ducts, additions, ADUs, and rooms the ductwork never reached.
The longer answer
Mini-splits connect via a line set — insulated copper refrigerant lines through a three-inch wall penetration. That small opening is why ductless retrofits preserve plaster walls in pre-war Seattle homes where duct surgery would be destructive and expensive.
Single-zone systems serve one space (ADU, bonus room, main floor); multi-zone systems run a whole home from one outdoor unit with independent control per head. Head sizing follows room load calculations, not room count — oversplitting into too many zones on one outdoor unit causes short-cycling.

A large share of Seattle's older housing stock was built without central ducting — ductless avoids $5,000–$15,000 of duct retrofit work.
